Borderline Personality Disorder is one of the most understood Mental Health Problems.
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness that can cause a lot of suffering, carries a risk of suicide and needs an accurate diagnosis along with targeted treatment. (BPDAustralia)
BPD is an often misunderstood illness and some of the signs and symptoms are:
Difficulties in regulating emotions
Inability to soothe self at times of stress
Intense and stormy relationships
Low self-esteem
Self sabotaging actions
Mood fluctuations
Impulsivity
These issues can make it difficult for the person to maintain, personal, social, educational and work relationships.
Besides affecting the person with BPD families can also be affected and find it difficult to give constant ongoing support. Families and friends need help and support to maintain their role in the lives of a person living with BPD.
The news is not all bad for people living with BPD or their families and friends.
Recent studies have suggested the majority of those with borderline personality disorder do well over time, with most experiencing sustained relief from symptoms, and around half being completely free of symptoms and able to function well in life. Pursuing treatment and learning about the condition and ways to manage it often pay off. In this way, BPD may be a high-risk condition but it has a good outlook.
